About the Awards- British Science Fiction Association Awards (BSFA)-

The BSFA awards are presented annually by the British Science Fiction Association, based on a vote of BSFA members and – in recent years – members of the British national science fiction convention (Eastercon).

The shortlists have now been announced for the BSFA awards for the best works of 2007, and also for a one-off award (to celebrate the BSFA’s fiftieth anniversary) for the best genre novel of 1958.

Ian McDonald Takes Out the Big One for 2007 with Brasyl

25th March 2008- The British Science Fiction Association has announced the winners of this year’s awards. The results are as follows:

* Novel: Brasyl, Ian McDonald (left)
* Short Fiction: “Lighting Out”, Ken MacLeod in Dislocations: Nine Stories of Speculationmcdonald_ian and Imagination
* Artwork: “Cracked World” (the cover of Dislocations: Nine Stories of Speculation and Imagination, ed. by Ian Whates), Andy Bigwood

Because this year is the 50th anniversary of the BSFA they decided to also make a special award for the best novel of 1958. The winner was Non-stop (Millennium SF Masterworks S) by Brian Aldiss. Brian was unable to accept the award in person as he is the Permanent Guest of Honor at ICFA, which was taking place the same weekend. However, the ICFA attendees managed to keep the secret all afternoon and a special presentation was made to Brian at the ICFA Awards Banquet.
